So you're not supposed to wear regular clothes at a ryokan. They give you a "yakata," which is kind of like a bathrobe/kimono thing, with a sash. The attendant who gave us our yakatas seemed quite concerned with my yakata's fit- apparently short Irish women are not frequent visitors to this particular ryokan.
