The next morning, we were up at 2:30am to join the 4am convoy to Abu Simbel. Since the 1997 terrorist attacks, the Egyptian government will not let tourists travel independently south of Luxor. If you want to visit Abu Siimbel, you must join an armed convoy at 4am. And nothing says "Bomb Me" quite like a thousand-person convoy, filled with wealthy tourists, leaving every day, at exactly the same time!! Well done, Egypt!!
Our Obama-desk-clerk was kind enough to pack us a very early breakfast for the 3-hour ride.
