We are walking 110K of the Via Francigena, to Rome! We start in Viterbo.

Getting my first timbro (stamp) in my Via Francigena credenziale (credential).

Whee! Timbro!

The Cathedral of Viterbo, mentioned in Dante's Inferno!

Next to the Cathedral is the Palazzo dei Papi, where popes lived.

The gorgeous medieval Old Town of Viterbo

Our first glimpse of Via Francigena signage, in Piazza dei Pelligrini (Plaza of the Pilgrims).

The gorgeous ceiling of La Chiesa de San Giovanni Battista

La Chiesa de San Giovanni Battista's altar

Another lovely Viterbo square. Many movies have been filmed here, including Orson Welles' "Othello".

Hidden gardens in Viterbo

Viterbo's squares at dusk.

Viterbo has many of these piazzas, with cafés surrounding a fountain in the center.

The next morning, we started the walk. We exited Viterbo through its walled city gates, Porta Romana.

Our first Via sign!

Our walk led us through park forestland.

In winter 2022, the Via Francigena association re-marked the trail with new stickers, tiles, and red paint. We would have been lost without it.

We walked by a random piece of Via Francigena fan art, in the middle of a large field.

Lovely waymarks on the trail

By lunchtime we'd reached the pretty little town of San Martino di Cimino, and their huge church.
