Montenegro

We arrived in lovely Kotor, Montenegro, just a fifteen-minute taxi ride from Tivar Airport. Montenegro was part of the former Yugoslavia.
Kotor is a nearly perfectly intact walled city, in the bowl of a mountainous valley.
Kotor's medieval city gates are still proudly framing the walled city entrance.
Our little hostel was inside the walled city, on the actual staircase that leads 1,355 steps up to the fortress.
The inside of our hostel, which is a renovated 15th century palazzo.
One of the many lovely outdoor cafes in Kotor's Old Town. This one had such good octopus that we ate here twice.
Kotor's Cathedral, in the shadow of the mountain and fortress.
The Kotor Cathedral.
A view of the Old Town's Square, from the medieval walls.
There are so many former palaces, or palazzos, in Old Town; today they are banks, hotels, or even drugstores.
Kotor's Town Hall, sandwiched in the town square.
If the building isn't an old palazzo, chances are it's a church. There is a church in every alley in Old Town.
The winding alleys of Old Town.
This was one of my favorite bars- with the multiple levels and grassy space, they made amazing use of a very teeny space.
A stunning view of Kotor's Old Town.
The Joneses conquer Old Town!! Note the fortress on the hilltop behind us, because we're going UP!
The mountain path up to the fortress.
Climbing higher...
...and climbing higher up the ramparts...
It's a long path: 1,355 steps, and 750 feet up.
